Meroe is located about 200 km from Khartoum and was the capital of the Kingdom of Kush for 600 years, starting from the third century BC.
It was a rich and thriving city, famous for its iron production, art, and trade with Egypt, Rome, Arabia, and India.
The necropolis of Meroe originally contained 200 pyramids, divided into two main groups: North and South.
The pyramids are smaller than the Egyptian ones but very beautiful and distinctive: ranging from 6 to 30 meters high, with a particularly steep inclination of up to 70°, and built from local sandstone. Each pyramid has a small area with bas-reliefs depicting the deceased in front of the gods—such as Amun, Isis, or local deities—and the burial chambers are located underground, not inside the pyramid.
