Volsinii, Velnza in Etruscan, was one of the most important cities in Etruria. A leading political and religious center, member of the League of the Twelve Etruscan Cities. It was also known for the presence of the Fanum Voltumnae, a sanctuary dedicated to the god Voltumna, recently identified at the foot of the Rupe di Orvieto (Orvieto Rock).
The exact location of Volsinii is still uncertain today, but the majority of scholars identify it with Orvieto.
There were intense and repeated conflicts with Rome between the 4th and 3rd centuries BC until the final defeat by the Romans led by Marcus Fulvius Flaccus. According to tradition, the survivors were relocated to a new site, and a Roman Volsinii was founded, now identified with Bolsena.
