Lake İznik, known in Turkish as İznik Gölü, is located in the Bursa province, in the northwest of Turkey. In antiquity, it was called Ascanio, a name linked to Assyrian tradition. Of tectonic origin, the lake covers an area of approximately 290 km² (112 square miles) and reaches a maximum depth of 80 meters (262 feet). It lies near the ancient city of Nicaea, now İznik, famous for its historical role during the Roman and Byzantine eras.
